Stun Your Audience with the Perfect Set List
Ok, so you can sing. For as long as you can remember, all of your friends would ask you to sing at lunch and as you got older you were the designated wedding singer or party entertainment. Now you are ready to step up your game beyond karaoke…but, what should you sing?
You need a set list. So, what is that?
A set list is a document that lists the songs that a band or musical artist intends to play. More importantly, a set list is the musical journey on which you take your audience.
Picking music for your set is so exciting because it is your opportunity as an artist to set the stage. By selecting the right songs, you build a story for your fans to connect with. You take them on the emotional highs and lows that come along with your song choices and you always leave them desiring more.
Here are a few things to consider when preparing a set list:
Who are you singing to?
It is very important to consider your audience. If you are playing to a rowdy crowd, be sure to give them something exciting. If you’re singing at a 50th anniversary party, be sure to include low-key, romantic songs. Your song selections will make all the difference!
Do your songs contrast in style and tempo?
Remember that planning a set list is like telling a story – you must have highs and lows, happy and melancholy moments, songs that make you want to dance and songs that make you reach for a tissue. Think of it as an arc or a rollercoaster and take your audience on an exciting ride.
What is your banter between songs? How will you lead from one song to another?
Be sure to communicate with your audience and remember that they are there to be entertained. Banter can be very effective when used correctly. If you decide to talk in between songs, remember to take that time into consideration when planning your set list. Tell stories and personal anecdotes that connect you with your song selections. Remember, you want your audience to associate your act with a brand. Decide how you would like to present yourself and your brand. If you want to be viewed as serious and professional, tell heartfelt stories with a meaning. To be viewed as more comedic, don’t be afraid to crack a few jokes.
What is your message as an artist and is that clear by way of the music you have selected?
All too often, people put on concerts that have no clear rhyme or reason to their musical selections, and they usually come off as lazy or confusing. Sticking to a theme is always the best bet. Not only is it more cohesive, but it also stimulates your audience. Theme your music based on genre (classical, rap, indie), type (love songs, party songs, holiday songs), artist, or stick to songs that tell a story when pieced together.
If you’re faced with the dilemma of how many songs should be on your set list, fill your time space appropriately, but remember this quote by Gypsy Rose, American burlesque entertainer: “Make them beg for more then don’t give it to ‘em.”
